Winterize your boat fuel system for a hassle-free boating experience

In many parts of the country, shorter days and cooler autumn weather signal that the end of the boating season is approaching. To protect your pride and joy and to ensure smooth operation in the spring, you must properly “winterize” your ship for storage. The same applies to any time you store your boat for a longer period of time without use, regardless of the weather or season.

The key to this process is taking steps to protect your boat’s engine and fuel system – including adding a proven fuel system additive specifically designed for use at sea. The fuel guide Chevron formulated the new Techron Marine Protection Plus fuel system treatment for use in all types of gasoline-powered boats. Just one ounce treats 10 gallons of gasoline, stabilizes the fuel for two years while protecting against harmful corrosion and deposits throughout the system.

To protect your boat’s engine and fuel system:

First, add the correct amount of fuel additive to a full gas tank. Keeping the fuel level full during storage will eliminate the air space in the tank which can cause condensation problems.

Next, change the element on your boat’s water separating fuel filter to ensure that you are removing any old fuel or accumulated water. If your boat doesn’t have one, adding one is a very good idea.

It is also important to run the boat at speed for a while to make sure that you are burning off all of the old gas from the engine and fuel lines and giving the extra fuel handling time time to circulate through the entire system. If you do this on the trailer or on a fresh water supply, let the engine idle for a good 15 minutes. If you have access to your boat during the off-season, it is also a good idea to start it up and let it run for a few minutes every few weeks.

By doing these things you will be ready to go when the weather warms up and the fish start biting again. If you take care of your fuel system during off-season storage at Techron Marine and use it every time you top up, you can enjoy boating year round.
