A stray cat brought its kittens to someone’s back yard and their life was changed forever.
Last week a family from Perth, Australia was surprised to discover a litter of kittens tucked in a tool bag in their backyard. A stray cat had come to find shelter for its kittens, but ran away and left them there.
The homeowners could not keep the kittens because they had a dog in the house and turned to Tara Hatch, founder of The Mad Catters Inc., for help.
“(We think) the mother cat was looking in the rain for a new nesting place for her precious babies. She carried them to her back yard and put them in a tool bag on a shelf off the floor,” Tara shared with Love Meow.
Knowing that a nursing cat would offer the kittens the best chance of survival, they set a humane trap in the area and hoped for the mother to return.
“We haven’t given up.”
After two nights and a lot of patience, they brought the mother cat to safety and reunited her with her five kittens in the comfort of a foster home.
The cat named Bella was very shy at first and tried to hide her face and avoid eye contact with people, but she couldn’t hide her happiness when she saw her babies.
She recognized them immediately and began to nurse them one by one.
“Bella can now feel relaxed and safe without the stress of predators, harsh weather, and most importantly – she will never go hungry or worry about finding food for her babies,” Tara said.
The kittens were so excited to have their mother with them again.
Bella is a devoted mom in love and takes care of all of her kitties’ needs. She is very happy with her new digs, all the soft kneading things and a food station that is constantly being supplied.
With her kitties by her side, Mama Bella learns to trust and progress every day.
She warms up for her foster mother and is no longer hiding in her nest when Tara enters the room. “She’s very shy, but she makes such a nice little relationship with me,” added Tara.
“She stresses hearing my cats, which is understandable because she has five babies to protect! But we can work on her cat socialization skills once they are all adults and have new homes.”
Thanks to the timely rescue, Bella was able to take care of a slight cat cold. She comes out of her shell and blends in well with her litter of five.
In just a few days, the kittens grew by leaps and bounds. They become more playful and spend a lot more time outside of the nest.
The little bundles of joy have explored every nook and cranny in their care room and are ready to jump, run, climb and create all sorts of antics. “You’re learning to take care of yourself. It’s one of the most delightful things to do,” Tara shared with Love Meow.
“The Gray and the Calico are girls, and the other three (Ginger) are boys.”
Sweet Bella did everything to get her five kittens to safety. Now the family of six is thriving in caring for and enjoying life as domestic cats.
