The great actress Cicely Tyson will be remembered for many outstanding roles – The Diary of Miss Jane Pittman, her performance in Roots, as well as dramatic twists and turns on Broadway, especially for her Tony-winning masterclass in The Trip to Bountiful. One of our favorites remains her portrayal of Rebecca, the mother of strength in the movie Sounder. The film is based on the Newberry Award-winning novel for young readers by William H. Armstrong. Both the book and the film show an honest portrait of the rural south – the story follows the eldest son of a loving and strong family of black stock traders who grew up in the south of the Depression after his father was imprisoned for stealing food. Sounder is the family’s beloved dog who helps them hunt and enables them to keep the food on the table. A constant companion of the main characters of the film, Sounder is a reassuring presence that gives strength to his family in the face of inhumanity. Do yourself a favor and watch Sounder and be amazed at Ms. Tyson’s performance.
