Name and age of the dog: Herbie, 5 years
Nicknames: Herbs, Herc, Kirk
Adoption history: I adopted Herbie from the Denton City Animal Shelter in March 2018. I’ve had cats all my life and after the tragic death of my last cat the year before, I couldn’t bear to have another.
I searched for months until it felt right and when I saw his picture I fell in love. The shelter volunteers told me he was found on the street eating rubbish and he was abandoned. I’ll never forget to go to the shelter and ask for “Dawg” (his shelter name) and the lady at the front desk said “which one?” That was a good laugh!

The protective bed looked huge compared to him and he looked like a small mop. I crouched by the window and, as if he knew I was there, he got up, turned around and waved his stub under all the shaggy hair. I promised him that he would never get hungry or cold again, that this time he would be loved forever. I’ll never keep that promise again, and even now he’s spoiled and happily sleeps next to me while I type.
He is special to me because of his sensitive but funny personality. His shaggy neck fluff and tiny mohawk are just the cherry on top of the blessing he is. It’s perfect, I couldn’t ask for a better canine companion calling mine, and I wouldn’t trade it for anything.
