Kitten Born as the only baby in the shelter, learns to be a cat with the help of a former carer

Pua the kitten was the only baby born. Now he’s learning to be a cat with the help of a former caregiver.

A pregnant cat was rescued from a hoarding situation and taken to a New Jersey animal shelter two months ago. She gave birth to a single kitten in mid-January and needed help.

Riley, the founder of A Bigger Purpose Kitten Rescue in Hellertown, Pennsylvania, took care of their mother and son. The mother cat Moana was unsocialized and was very afraid of people. To help them decompress, they offered the duo a quiet place and the mother plenty to eat.

With a comfortable room and good nutrition, Moana did a wonderful job taking care of her only kitten, Pua.

When the ginger boy was 2 1/2 weeks old, the mother cat fell ill and was diagnosed with feline calicivirus. She could no longer take care of her kitten and they both needed medical attention.

“The treatment she was undergoing wasn’t safe for the kitten to breastfeed, so he turned into a bottle baby,” Riley told Love Meow.

Pua, who also sneezed and had a small ulcer on his tongue, was tube-fed for a few days before he could cling to a bottle.

While his mother took the best care of her recovery, the kitten was hand-raised every few hours. Riley took him everywhere to make sure he was looked after around the clock.

“He was always a loud baby which showed he wanted to live,” added Riley.

When the little pua was big enough to meet other kittens, Riley’s kitten Coconut immediately offered a helping paw. Just like Pua, Coconut came to the rescue as a small singleton.

“Coconut was found in a car dealership lot just hours old. He was battling a severe upper respiratory infection and we thought we’d lose him often,” Riley told Love Meow.

The little fighter eventually bounced back and crept into Riley’s heart.

Coconut is usually skeptical of new kittens at first, and it takes a while for him to warm up for them. But somehow Pua gave him a different mood.

When they first looked at each other, Coconut immediately took the kitten and began caring for it.

“Both of them bonded over the fact that they were raised as bottle babies.”

“They’re always chasing each other and Pua loves to pounce on Coconut. He’s the cutest fluffball now and thinks he’s so wild and lively,” Riley shared with Love Meow.

Coconut insists on cleaning pua from head to toe after each feed. He grabs the kitten and won’t let it escape when there is a mandatory bath. “He’s licking Pua’s milk mustache right afterwards.”

If Riley has the kitten too long, Coconut will try to steal it from her to play and wash his face clean.

“Every time I put Pua down, Coconut comes running from the other end of the room. He’s like a mother cat and scratches kittens when they run away from him.”

Pua loves Coconut and follows him around, mimicking his every move. It’s like the big kitten is showing the little buddy the ropes and teaching him how to be a real cat.

The sweet ginger thrives with a friend watching over it every step of the way.

Momma Moana has recovered from weeks of treatment and is ready to retire from motherhood once and for all. Homeward Bound Pet Adoption (HBNJ) added her to their socialization program to help her learn to trust.

“We are so happy and grateful to HBNJ that they included Moana on their program to give her the best shot in life she deserves,” said Riley.

Pua is now six weeks old and is blossoming into a wild ginger cat. He is so lucky to have a big brother who can keep up with his unbridled energy and shower him with love and licks.
