Dog that has been neglected in the cage for weeks is now fighting for its life

Somebody donating supplies to the Kentucky Humane Society (KHS) saw something unusual on their way into the building. A malnourished dog was resting all alone in the parking lot. The person immediately notified the shelter and the staff took the dog to emergency care. He was quickly given the name Ethan, and although his chances of survival were slim, shelter staff and vets fought for him.

Ethan still has a long way to go in recovery, but he is strong despite everything.

Worst case of neglect

This is one of the worst situations the shelter has ever faced. It is believed that ethane was left alone in a box with no food or water for weeks. However, it is unclear whether he was deliberately neglected or whether someone did not intend to leave him alone for so long.

“Ethan’s the thinnest dog I’ve ever seen and is still alive. He weighs 38 pounds when he should be around 80 pounds, ”said KHS veterinarian Dr. Emily Bewley. “To get into this shape, he had to starve to death for weeks.”

Ethan is so thin you can see the outline of every bone in his body. He cannot support his own weight because of extreme muscle loss. The shelter staff suspect he is young, around 3 or 4 years old.

Not long after Ethan’s arrival, his condition worsened. He showed rapid breathing and neurological symptoms such as twitching. Emergency doctors rushed to save his life. After proper grooming, his twitching subsided and he even wagged his tail for the first time.

Ethan is fighting for his life

Ethan’s still out of the woods, but he’s showing promising signs of recovery. Vets say they are “cautiously optimistic” that he will survive this. He has already faced all adversity and it is clear that he has a strong will to live.

“Ethan is still alive and in critical but stable condition in the veterinary clinic. He has started eating and drinking again, but he has to be held up to bite and swallow because he is too weak to hold his own head up. We take it very slowly and steadily and hope that he is strong enough to fight, ”KHS wrote on Facebook.

This brave pup has already gained a lot of love and support through social media posts. Everyone stands up for him while he continues to make small improvements. KHS is still hoping to find out what happened to Ethan. So if you have any information about the incident please call Louisville Metro Animal Services at 502-473-7387.

The staff also encourage people to donate to support Ethan and the other animals in their care. Updates on Ethan’s health will continue to be posted on the KHS Facebook page. It’s a wonder Ethan is still alive and he looks like he’ll keep fighting for as long as possible.
